Ubuntu for a month

I’m glad I made a post about the programs I use after a recent reformat (a biannual thing for Windows users), as it gave me a good view of the stuff that’s necessary for me to function, and to determine which ones I’d have to find an open source alternative for.

It’s not that easy. I’m a tech writer, and much of the action (especially in gaming) is on the Win platform. People rely on me for Win tech-support, and there’re also the gadgets I’d need to work with, 100% of which provide drivers and software only for Win and Mac. Then there’s the familiarity issue, especially with tools like Photoshop, Homesite and FTP client Filezilla, whose keyboard shortcuts I memorize by heart. Photoshop keyboard shortcuts are vital to cutting your work time by half or more. Giving up Photoshop will be a pain (sob).

SE W550i write up out

My review of the Sony Ericsson W550i finally came out yesterday, rather belatedly since I submitted it about two months ago, but it’s all good.

I really really liked that phone, and for P15,000.00 (at the time I reviewed it), I think it was a steal with its internal 256mb, built in radio, music player capabilities, and comfortable (sideways) way of playing downloadable Java games. Caveats are lack of expandable memory, a proprietary connector for headphones and USB, its bulk and weight and the sideways opening thing loses its appeal after a few weeks.

Gadget Buying Tips (renamed ‘Lowdown on Gadgets’) article is now out

Well it was supposed to be an article about gadget buying, but was edited to come out as “The lowdown on gadgets”, a kind of opinion / commentary about gadgets. Which is good, I suppose, considering it wasn’t edited as much. Who can possibly predict what editors think really? IMHO, we might as well be on completely different planets both in writing style and in what we’re trying to say.

There’s an error in a paragraph where I say “Two things to remember about buying laptops”, the first (size and weight are king) is mentioned, but the second was completely edited out.

At any rate, like I said, it’s all good. Some people might disagree with this one, but I’m fairly sure I’m being forthcoming and honest when I say, for example, that people should, even if they had the money, buy what’s best for them as opposed to the top of the line models.

My Articles Page is now up!

Finally finally finally.

I’ve finally gotten around to making my articles page here.

I’d always demurred from said activity as I had thought it rather vain, but I’ve decided it’s best to upload them as they greatly help me figure out when (and sometimes, for whom) I wrote an article for at any given time, without having to dig deep into the deep inner workings of my d:\ partition where everything is stored, and where many a search had failed to result positively from sheer clutter.

At least this way, my blog serves as a backup of these records. Also, and let’s be honest here, it’ll help me find writing work, and I’m very much in the market.

Interview of Arnold Gamboa re Linux Migration from Windows

Interview of Arnold Gamboa re Linux Migration from WindowsI promised I’d post my interview of Mr. Arnold Gamboa, Managing Director of Sparrow Interactive, regarding the successful migration of 16 of their Windows machines to Linux.

This has to do with my talk last April 8, Saturday, at the PLUG 2nd Quarterly Free Seminar Series. Incidentally, I learned of Arnold’s migration from his post about it at Pinoytechblog, so here’s some linklove in that direction.

Without further ado:

Come One Come All To 1984

come one come all to 1984The title is a phrase from Incubus’ Talkshows on Mute, then there is of course Orsen Wells’ 1984, the first Terminator story was set in 1984, and on May of that year, Australia released it’s first one dollar coin, a factoid I insidiously placed there purely to round out this paragraph, which of course is quite irrelevant and uninteresting, except of course to Australians.

At any rate I’m bringing your attention to 1984 because I’m about to talk about my car, which was first sold to its original owner in 1984, and is an otherwise uninteresting car if not for that fact.

At this point you might well discern that this post is about a car, and not about my usual subjects, such as tech reviews, writing and even basketball, and you will be correct. So those uninterested in said subject may well excuse themselves at this point.

Nobody wants to read my basketball posts so..

dsc-w50Quick post. Happy to note my article about the Sony DSC-R1 SLR was well received, and by ‘well received’ I mean ‘noted’, ‘discussed’ and ‘critiqued’, which may or may not also mean that I was told I was wrong.

Let me put it this way. Imo, if someone takes time to tell you ‘dude, check out the Canon so and so model, better daw than the Sony’, I consider that ‘well-received’, because 1. they read it, and 2. they formed an opinion based on it. Agreeing with what I said is beside the point really. The point is to make people lend an interested ear.
