First takes on the Canon Ixus 60

Sitting on my desk in some protective cloth-like casing it came with is the Canon Ixus 60, spec’d as follows:

  • 6.0 megapixels
  • 3x optical zoom
  • 2.5″ lcd screen
  • Resolution max/min: 2816×2112 / 640×480
  • Sensor size / type: 1/2.5 / CCD
  • weight: 140 g (4.9 oz)
  • Inclusive 16mb. SD card
  • dimensions: 86 x 54 x 22 mm (3.4 x 2.1 x 0.9 in)

Don’t know the price yet as I just picked it up yesterday from PDI. First thing you’ll notice is how pretty it is, in its sleek silver contemporary styled casing that the Ixus brand has been known for. Everything feels solid and nothing shakes or rattles. It springs to life once you turn it on and you’re ready to take shots at such a high level of quality that it’s really quite stunning to consider how far we’ve gone in the digital camera segment, when a tiny point and click thing like this that looks more like a fashion accessory can take shots that used to require 35mm monsters.

I still owe PDI a review of the Sony DSC-W50, an almost equal spec 6 megapixel digicam with almost the same exact size, weight and target market, so I just might decide to do a Face Off instead.

I think it might be more interesting that way, and besides it’d be easier to write.

  1. In those two cameras , what do you think is better in terms of quality of pictures and perfomance? i’m planning to buy next month, and i’m choosing between the two

  2. performance is almost exactly the same, eds. same with ease of use, weight, connectivity and all that. Both also have adequate support in the Phils.

If you leave it down to style points, the Sony is available in a brushed aluminum cover and in black, while the Canon is only in the color above. Those might be the selling factors as the target market is more interested in things like that rather than spot metering and 9 point autofocus.
