    From the Chicago Tribune:

    Roger Ebert hospitalized after cancer-related surgery

    Pulitzer Prize-winning movie critic Roger Ebert was in serious but stable condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital following emergency surgery related to an earlier cancer-related procedure. Ebert had surgery June 16 after a tumor from salivary cancer recurred, said his employer, WLS-Ch. 7 in information approved by Ebert’s family.

    On Sunday, doctors repaired a burst blood vessel, a complication from the earlier surgery, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Ebert, a nationally syndicated writer and television host of the weekly movie review show “Ebert and Roeper,” is also employed by the Sun-Times.

  • Barcamp thoughts

    I just watched this video about Barcamp, with the goal to show what it’s all about and such.

    I first read of it from Sacha’s blog. Incidentally, her blog, featuring her travails as a stude in Canada, is a fascinating read of the adventures (and misadventures) of a young woman learning her way around the campus, and consequently in life.

    It loads like molasses (sorry Sacha :D), but when you read it you’ll likely feel like I do, and applaud her, as if cheering on a heroine in a movie, as she goes through her daily stuff. She is me several years ago (just how many years is not the subject of this blog entry thank you very much), and you’d probably find a part of yourself in her as well.

  • ‘Authors’, nice Moleskin alternatives for hallucinating writers

    I’m a big notebook collector, and no it’s not ‘notebooks – computers’ but ‘notebook – Jolina on the cover’. You know, the one with paper, and requires a pen.

    Anyway I’m nuts about these. I appreciate it whenever us press people are given freebie nice ones (I tend to use them till they fall apart), and there was a time I’d buy one every time I’d go to National Bookstore, so I’ve tried the ‘Blue Feather’, the yellow ‘King Jim’, ‘Green Apple’ and all sorts of other brands. I don’t like the spiral ones, I prefer the ones with a spine and I’d use it till it’d get all worn out and loose – leafed (if there’s such a word).

    So this brought me to start wondering what the best type is out there, so I surfed and learned about Moleskins, reportedly the ones used by Van Gogh, Chatisse, Hemingway, Matisse and Gary Mercado. Yes I just sneaked my name in there, to see how it’d look aside those legends. Pitiful, I know.

    At any rate, I was meandering about Greenbelt 2 the other day when I found these, called (I hope I get it right) “Authors” notebooks. Sorry about the lousy 1.3mpx pics. Anyway they’re covered in soft leather, come in fashionable colors (black, blue, red, pink, green, white etc.) and have really nice unlined paper in it, perfect for when you’re harboring hopeless thoughts of writing the next great Philippine novel, as I am wont to do often during the day.

  • Imax Shmimax

    First of all, this is in no way a hit on our gracious benefactor, a very rich and powerful company, for providing me two tickets to watch Superman Returns at the IMax theater two days ago, at the Mall Of Asia (is it ‘Mall of Asia’ or ‘SM Mall of Asia’?)

    As a token of gratitude for an article I wrote about them, it is one of the rare occasions when I’ve received freebies from my writing, and it is highly appreciated in all ways possible.

    And now, to my thoughts on the famous Imax theater.

    1. It is not eight stories high. Likely, it is five stories, and once the movie starts, only three of these ‘stories’ are taken up. Still impressive of course.
    2. The sound is terrific. To its credit. As it should be. And it’s amazing.
    3. Woe betide those who sit in Aisle A. We were sitting in Aisle C, 3rd nearest the screen. Golly what a headache.
    4. Oh, did I mention headache? YES. AND THIS DESERVES ALL-CAPS. MONSTROUS GARGANTUAN HEADACHE.

  • Ubuntu for a month

    I’m glad I made a post about the programs I use after a recent reformat (a biannual thing for Windows users), as it gave me a good view of the stuff that’s necessary for me to function, and to determine which ones I’d have to find an open source alternative for.

    It’s not that easy. I’m a tech writer, and much of the action (especially in gaming) is on the Win platform. People rely on me for Win tech-support, and there’re also the gadgets I’d need to work with, 100% of which provide drivers and software only for Win and Mac. Then there’s the familiarity issue, especially with tools like Photoshop, Homesite and FTP client Filezilla, whose keyboard shortcuts I memorize by heart. Photoshop keyboard shortcuts are vital to cutting your work time by half or more. Giving up Photoshop will be a pain (sob).

    Dang. I’ve been opening bottles that way since HS (and yes, that was a long time ago). Maybe I should make a vid of me opening one with a lighter, and the ‘FPJ’ method, where you slam the cap off the side of a table in one smooth (it better be smooth) downward stroke.
