Basic Digital Cinematography is a workshop that introduces the participants to the tools, equipment, and technical work of the cinematographer (and the gaffer), in the context of digital filmmaking. Participants and are introduced to the art & technique of lighting for video (e.g., manipulating the quality & quantity of light; deciding on light sources; learning color temperatures; making decisions on lighting motivations; mounting the 3-point lighting system) and using the digital camera (e.g., maximizing the stationary and the mobile frames; making decisions on composition).

Sound & Music Design for Film: Indigenous Filipino Music & World Chants is a workshop for those who are interested in exploring sound-emotionscapes for film, including directing and/or creating music scores, inspired by traditional Filipino music and melodic chants from various parts of the globe. Participants go through the basics of hands-on film sound recording & sound manipulation, and, at the same time, learn Filipino melodic & rhythmic patterns, played on indigenous and modern instruments. Indie Film Production Management workshop examines the role of the production manager in an independent film production. It emphasizes both theoretical and practical matters involved in a production’s logistical management, including script breakdown and analysis, scheduling workflow, budgeting, and acquisition of personnel and facilities. Exercises lead to a hands-on understanding of the actual producing and managing of a digital movie.

Art & Animation is a workshop that equips the participants’ eyes, hands, and imaginations, like no other animation workshop in town can do. It aims to hone students’ skills to create animated works using materials that range from everyday things to new technologies. In this workshop, participants are introduced to various media and techniques of animation, such as flipbook, thumbnail & storyboards; cut-outs, collage & silhouette; found object assemblage & clay; paint-on-glass & colored sand; and others.

Basic Scriptwriting: Visualizing from Scratch is a workshop intended for the absolute beginner, who has no background whatsoever in film, writing, media or the arts, but who wants to discover the possibilities of scriptwriting. It introduces participants to the “real basics” of writing for film, from the “translation” of written abstract concepts into visual-moving images (and vice versa – translation of perceived cinematic images into the written word), to a hands-on discovery of the essential concepts and components of a script that works.

Writing About Film II: Theory and Criticism is a workshop that seeks to introduce participants to key classical and contemporary film theories and to prepare them to write informed and scholarly film criticism. Its aim is to survey philosophies of aesthetics as they can be related to film (e.g., Greco-Roman, Hebrew, Asian); early theories that sought to define the essence of film as art form (e.g., theories by Eisenstein, Arnheim, Bazin); and contemporary theories that deal with film as cultural-political-economic apparatus (e.g., structuralism, deconstructionism, postcolonialism).

Writing About Film I: Audiovisual Analysis is a workshop that seeks to introduce participants to the aesthetics of film and to prepare them to analytically interact with any given film text. Its aim is to survey the fundamental formal aspects of film, which constitute it as an art form. Furthermore, it seeks to introduce participants to the basic narrative, technical, and stylistic qualities and conventions of cinema, all considered within specific historical, cultural, and sociopolitical contexts.
