got invite?

got my 30gigs.com today. Thoughts:

  • lj and, more famously, gmail got wildly popular via the exclusivity brought about by being available initially only via invite. Will this work for 30gigs?
  • i can think of a few reasons why not, primarily for lj blogging was on the rise and it just seemed really cool to be on lj at the time, and gmail, well who can resist 1gb (then) of free email?
  • Neither is true for 30gigs. In fact, when I offered a friend, his remark was “dunno how I’d use that.”.
  • As for myself, I’m definitely gonna try to move almost all my work stuff there. After a recent quarterly reformat/reinstall of my PC (a requisite for every internet connected WinPC in my opinion), I realized I really had only a few files I really needed. I’d always been an advocate of removing clutter and avoiding bloated software in my articles, and as a result (and rather surprisingly actually,) it turns out my PC is about as lean and mean as practically possible. The only things really important to me are my project files, which have copies online, and my email, which is almost exclusively gmail, as my supposedly ‘real’ email using my domain exchange.ph gets spam almost exclusively. What’s more, gmail’s GUI is just so darn easy to use. FOSS alternatives such as Neomail and Squirrelmail, while nice and free, just really don’t make the cut.
  • 30gigs promises that I might be able to move all my workstuff there (which really, is only about 1gb.), and finally, be completely online.

we’ll see. btw, want one?
