aaand we’re back! (again)

Finally found a good enough host for this blog, and Movie Exchange as well, which we are now re-christening as (drumroll please…):

flickmaniac.com

awww yeah. I admit there was a point when I was wondering if I was even gonna resurrect either blog, but I decided, what the heck. The cost isn’t too steep and besides, I really don’t like the idea of stuff I’ve written in either blog to just disappear forever. Not that I’m necessarily the most read-worthy or sensible (or even consistent) blogger in the world but hey, I occasionally have my moments (at least I hope so) so I really don’t want it all to end up as some .tarball on my hard disk after all that work.

Having said that, I’d like to say I also miss PWIT (Philippine Week in Tech) too, which I was writing for a few months back but unfortunately was put to pasture by Adel. Truth is I have a lot of explaining to do as per the fact I missed out on writing duties on that blog when it was still around, but at the end of the day I kinda feel bad that stuff I wrote on it is gone forever. So Adel, if you read this, please holler if you’re interested in working to put it together again ok? I promise I’ll be more diligent in my writing duties.

Re Comcast, AOL and MS buying into Facebook

There have been 3 alarming things re the internet on the news today. (btw yeah i’m gonna talk about tech again for once. Dont worry i’m not getting all political as per last few posts. I just write whatever gets in my head basically).

Anyway, these are that Comcast had apparently been blocking / delaying some Internet traffic, and that ‘Email forwarding’ is being looked into by the US’ FCC after someone there lost a lot of business when AOL closed her account without warning, cancelling her email account and damaging her business. And the 3rd and final one is that Microsoft has bought into Facebook.

Obviously these issues happened in the States and had affected Americans directly, but being on the Internet, the effect of these things are universal. If Comcast decides to limit Internet traffic on certain protocols, servers, or whatever, anyone on the Internet accessing them is gonna be affected, and yes that includes us here in the bush.

Looks like I’m gonna have to move this blog again.

My hosting costs are a bitch. Fortunately my previous problems with mysql and speed issues seem to have been resolved, but now my data transfer rates are through the roof, and I am making an inventory of everything in my server and deciding on whether to take them out (and most of the time it’s out).

So goodbye Movie Exchange?
Goodbye (gasp) Basketball Exchange?

Sigh. I dunno. It feels lousy that I’m stuck with the bill after projects didn’t push through. But what the hey, better they had failed now than in the future I guess. In the meantime, I’m sure this blog has to go too.

Oh well. Decisions have to be made. Nobody said it was gonna be easy.

Wanna write for Movie Exchange?

Writing for this site is a labor of love. We aren’t profitable (yet), and we aren’t important enough (yet!) to get movie tickets or freebies. In the meantime, writing about movies demands your best. You have to write with your heart – to reach inside you and find exactly what it is that makes you love – or hate, a movie.

If you think that’s crap, then the rest of the internet awaits you. But, if you love movies passionately, and understand that writing about a passion deserves no less than your best, then your opinion deserves to be read.

If you’re up to it, email me, and tell me why you want to write for Movie Exchange.

J Angelo Gets It Done

Congrats to J Angelo Racoma for his successful efforts to bring Paypal into the country!

Angelo is humble about it, as per his entry:

We think its good that PayPal has again enabled its services here in the Philippines. This will enable Filipinos here to purchase goods and services online. However, the functionality is still very limited, and we are still not able to use the service for our intended purpose, which is to receive funds. We think this is a bigger aspect, since being able to receive funds online will greatly benefit Pinoys who need a quick, cheap and (relatively) safe means to receive money online from here and abroad.

Its not perfect, but its a good start.

I agree, and congratulations are in order to him and those who helped.

I’m screwed

  • My PC is rebooting all by itself. I used a super duper cleaner on it in a majorly fashion yesterday, and although the motherboard looks sparkling new now, it’s still rebooting, so I’m in for it. Plan A is to replace the power supply, which is my best guess culprit, and buy a new [tag]automatic voltage regulator[/tag] / [tag]uninterruptible power supply[/tag]. If that doesn’t work, then it’s time to look at new motherboards and RAM. No my finances aren’t able to handle this right now. When is it ever.
  • Please take a look at the new photos I put up at Elordeboxing.com. You look at those things and you think how precious they are. Thing is, there are tons more where that came from, but many are untitled and un-signed. I’ll put up a page soon saying that if there are any folks who want to contribute details to the untitled pics, to let me know.

Aug – Sep are the most beautiful times of the year. Barops. How Terrorists and the government can help one another, and other troubling thoughts.

I just turned off the TV after watching people like former National Security Adviser Roilo Golez, the head of the PNP group in charge of Aviation safety, and some Airport chief person lambast a recent event where a security expert boarded a Davao plane and easily put together a bomb.

According to them, the reported security breach could adversely affect the countrys economy and tourism industry, and someone said Tourist arrivals might go down and that could adversely affect our economy. Golez said that the expert should have confirmed with the Authorities first, before conducting the test, presumably so they would be more prepared. The PNP guy said Pinahiya kami nang walang laban (We were embarrassed without being given a chance to give our side), according to here.

You know what? I agree! While we’re at it, the best thing to do imo, is ask all the terrorists, to please register themselves with the Philippine Government, and kindly inform us whenever they plan to undertake civil unrest, kidnappings, suicide bomb attacks, beheadings, crashing planes into buildings, and all sorts of activity that may be described as ‘terrorist’ or ‘terrorist-like’.

Bulletpoints du Jour

  • I’ve got two appointments today, a presscon in the afternoon, a meeting before that, the press launch of a new Nokia phone in the evening, two articles to write start and one to re-edit (yes ‘re-edit’ since i’ve already edited it and now i’ve to do it again). Yet here I am blogging away using time I could use for better purposes. Haay.
  • I’ve a new blogging project I’m seriously giving thought, and I’ve no doubt it’d be interesting, but unfortunately I’m spreading myself too thin. Movie Exchange isn’t moving (hadn’t had time to watch) and I’m starting to concentrate on Ballex, given the UAAP and the Fiba World Championships are coming round.
